I agree with you both on the subject of degrees versus potential earnings. However, the majority of degree graduates will in fact enter the workforce at a higher salary range than those who do not have a degree. The degree is not a guarantee for personal financial wealth, nor does it provide the incentive to succeed in your chosen career. What a degree does do is demonstrate to potential employers that you can apply yourself, that you have achieved a level of education that equips you to undertake the role, that you have the ability to provide the organization with some qualities that may be lacking in someone who does not have a degree. Typically these qualities are: research, assessment and often but not always, an ability to present your subject with a sound theoretical argument.

Very good point. Having a higher degree doesn’t always mean more money, and yes there are people with lower or even no college degree that are able to earn good money and sometimes more than a person with a college degree. While it’s true that your level of degree will have an impact on your paycheck, sometimes people with lower level, vocational degrees end up earning more than those who have a bachelor’s degree. You should take into account your personal goals, the time you’re willing to commit to education, the amount of money you can spend on it, etc. before deciding on the level of your college degree. Most colleges, including Stevens-Henager College that has five campuses in Utah and Idaho, offer degree programs at associate’s, bachelor’s, as well as master’s levels.
